(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) - The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with 324 incidents this past week, here are some examples:
May 28:
A resident on Rice Lake Drive North in Hamilton Township reported the theft of driveway sealant syphoned from a large tank on a truck sometime over the weekend.*
Police responded to a domestic disturbance at a Brighton home resulting in the arrest of a 28 year old male who was subsequently charged with Spousal Assault and Assault Cause Bodily Harm. He was held for a bail hearing resulting in his release with a next court appearance scheduled in June 2018. Name withheld to protect the identity of the victim.
Officer dealt with three domestic disputes in Trent Hills - request to remove intoxicated boyfriend, dispute over property and a husband confronting his spouse at another's residence. No charges resulted in these investigations.
May 29:
At 1:00 a.m. police received a report of a possible impaired driver operating a black sedan eastbound on Highway 401 in Hamilton Township. Witnesses reported that the vehicle's speeds were inconsistent and that the vehicle had at one point come to a complete stop in a live lane. An officer located the car and determined that the driver, a 65 year old Peterborough man, was not impaired. EMS was called to the scene and medically cleared the driver who was charged with Interfere with traffic contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. A request was also made with the Ministry of Transportation for a licence review that requires clearance from a medical practitioner to maintain a driver's licence.
Shortly after 1:30 p.m. police received a complaint of two people attempting to sell jewellery in a parking lot in downtown Brighton. They stated they needed gas money to get to Montreal. Witnesses described them as a male with a light brown skin tone, 50 years old, approximately 5 4" (163cm) and a heavy build accompanied by a female with a light brown skin tone, 50 years old, approximately 5 2" (157cm) and a heavy build wearing a headdress and full skirt. Officers checked the area but were unable to locate the pair. Similar scams have been reported in Eastern Ontario with similar descriptions of suspects who sell fake jewellery to the unsuspecting public.*
At approximately 8:00 p.m. police responded to a reported fight between several males in downtown Colborne. No disturbance was found but the officers did identify the two main persons involved in the conflict. After speaking to witnesses police attempted to locate and arrest one of those males. That male, a 28 year old local man, turned himself in to police at the Cobourg OPP detachment on June 1, 2018 and now faces charges of Utter Death Threats (two counts) and Assault with a Weapon. He was released and faces an impending court date later this month. Name withheld as the investigation is domestic in nature.
May 30:
Police received several panic alarms at the Campbellford Memorial Hospital at 7:30 a.m. Officers and hospital staff determined the alarms to be false caused by work currently being done to the system by an alarm company.
A Milton area man reported the theft of his backpack while fishing on April 28, 2018 at the Ganaraska River near Hawkins Road in the Municipality of Port Hope. The black Swiss Army backpack contained a Fuji XPro2 Graphite camera with XF23mm F2 lens serial # 71A01085.*
Officer investigated three domestic disputes, none of which resulted in charges. Alderville - verbal argument over relationship issues, Cramahe Township - female called friend (who in turn contacted police) with fabricated story of domestic assault, officers confirmed the complaint to be unfounded, Trent Hills - verbal argument over selling home.
May 31:
Police received a complaint from a motorist travelling eastbound on Highway 401 in the Municipality of Port Hope of a foot and pant cuff hanging out of the trunk on another car. Officers located the car and confirmed that there was indeed a plastic foot hanging out of the trunk. The driver apologized for the forgotten Halloween gag and tucked it away back in the trunk.
At approximately 6:30 p.m. police received a complaint of a possible impaired driver travelling eastbound in a black sedan from the Bowmanville area on Highway 401. An officer located the vehicle on Ontario Street in Hamilton Township and determined that the driver had been drinking. He was arrested and taken to the Port Hope Police station for further tests. Sean ONEILL age 38 of Caesarea, Ontario is charged with Impaired Care & Control of a motor vehicle and Fail or Refuse to Provide Sample. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on June 20, 2018.
- At 9:00 p.m. a bus driver travelling through the Cobourg area on Highway 401 contacted police regarding a disruptive passenger. Officers attended and arrested a 55 year old Hamilton, Ontario man who had been drinking. He was taken to the Cobourg OPP detachment and held until he was sober when he was released charged with being intoxicated in a public place.
Northumberland OPP officers investigated fourteen accidental 911 calls, seventeen motor vehicle collisions, 67 traffic related complaints and conducted ten RIDE programs during this time period.
