(HALDIMAND COUNTY, ON) - The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Haldimand County Detachment is investigating a fraud after a victim was scammed for approximately $140,000 at a York, Haldimand County, Ontario address.
On Friday August 17, 2018 at 7:46 p.m., OPP responded for a report of a fraud where the victim reported to have lost $140,000 in an apparent lottery scam.
OPP investigation has determined that in March 2018, the victim was notified that they had allegedly won $1.4 million (United States currency) in a Powerball lottery.
The fraudster had then told the victim that they would be required to pay twenty per cent of the winnings to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as per government regulations.
The victim had made payment installments since March that have accumulated to $140,000 before a family member noticed the transactions and contacted police.
