(QUINTE WEST, ON) - On September 7, 2018 at approximately 1:56 p.m. officers from the Quinte West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) as well as the Quinte West Fire Department and Hastings Quinte EMS responded to Lock 4 of the Trent Severn Waterway along Glen miller Road in the City of Quinte West for a report of a possible drowning.
Emergency services arrived on scene and searched for the male who had earlier been observed unconscious and face down in the water.
After a short search the male was located and recovered from below the water and was pulled to shore. Resuscitation attempts failed and the male was pronounced deceased.
OPP report that a, 87 year old male of the city of Belleville, has been identified as the victim of the drowning.
The identity of the victim is being withheld until notifications to family have been made.
OPP are advising the public to not only carry a life jacket on board your vessel but to wear it. Wearing a life jacket can save your life if you are not in a position to keep yourself afloat.
