(GODERICH, ON) - A 49-year-old from Lucknow is facing an Impaired by Drug charge following an incident that took place in Goderich earlier this week.
At approximately 10:15 a.m. on Monday, June 24, 2019 members from the Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment observed a compact car being operated on the Square in Goderich with two flat rear tires and a smashed out window. Officers watched as the driver parked in a parking space near the Goderich OPP Detachment and then he exited his vehicle and walked across the road to the Courthouse Square Park.
An OPP officer walked over and met up with the driver to investigate further. Upon speaking with the male driver officers noted the male had sustained some injuries from an earlier altercation so he was transported to hospital for treatment.
While speaking with the driver the investigating officer noted the driver to also be displaying several signs of impairment. As such a Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST) trained officer attended to assist with the investigation. The driver performed poorly on the physical tests so he was arrested for Impaired Operation by a Drug.
A Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE) completed further assessment on the driver and upon completion of the DRE evaluation the driver was deemed to be impaired by a drug.
Robin WELLSTEAD, 49 years of age from Lucknow has been charged with Operation While Impaired by a Drug. He has since been released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for August 8, 2019 at the Ontario Court of Justice - Goderich.
