(ASHFIELD-COLBORNE-WAWANOSH, ON) - Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has laid Dangerous Driving and Refuse to Comply with Demand charges against an Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh man following a traffic stop that took place just north of Goderich last weekend.
At approximately 2:42 a.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2019 a Huron OPP officer spotted a pickup truck travelling northbound at a high rate of speed on Victoria Street in the Town of Goderich. The officer watched as the driver dangerously crossed into the southbound lane of traffic and travelled in this lane for quite a distance. The driver continued driving erratically as he left Goderich travelling northbound on Bluewater Veteran's Highway.
Just north of Airport Road the suspect vehicle pulled in to a restaurant and was stopped by police. The driver was immediately arrested for Dangerous Driving. Upon speaking with the driver the investigating officer noted the driver to be displaying signs of impairment by way of a drug. As a result the investigating officer made a demand for the driver to submit to an evaluation by a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE).
The driver was transported to the Huron Detachment and was provided the opportunity to perform the drug evaluation tests however he refused to comply with the tests.
Jonathan LEWIS, 42 years of age, from Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh has been charged with Dangerous Operation and Refusal to Comply with Demand. He was later released from custody with a court date scheduled for August 19, 2019 at the Ontario Court of Justice - Goderich. His vehicle was impounded and his licence has been suspended for an automatic 90 days.
