(HALDIMAND COUNTY, ON) - The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Haldimand County Detachment has charged a 23-year-old male with drinking and driving offences as well as multiple Highway Traffic Act offences following a traffic stop at a Rainham Road, South Cayuga, Haldimand County, Ontario address.
On Saturday April 28, 2018 at 1:52 a.m., OPP noticed a vehicle in violation of a Highway Traffic Act offence in the area of Johnson Road in Dunnville. When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle by activating their emergency lights, the driver of the vehicle continued driving along obeying the posted speed limits, ignoring the emergency lights and sirens.
In the interest of public safety, the officer discontinued attempting to stop the vehicle.
The vehicle was strategically followed while other officers attended the area and successfully deployed a tire deflation device on Rainham Road near Sweets Corners where the vehicle subsequently slowed and came to a stop.
While speaking with the male driver, officers detected signs of impairment by alcohol and the driver was arrested without incident.
Further investigation and inspection of the vehicle determined the driver was also in violation of multiple Highway Traffic Act offences.
OPP has charged 23-year-old Mitchell PETTA of Dunnville, Haldimand County, Ontario with:
Driving a motor vehicle while impaired
Driving a motor vehicle with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood
Flight while pursued by a peace officer
Use plates not authorized for vehicle
Operate unsafe vehicle
Fail to stop when signaled by a police officer
Fail to surrender permit for vehicle
Operate motor vehicle without insurance
Improper muffler
Entire plate not visible
He is to appear in Provincial Court Cayuga at a later date to answer to the charges.
