(LONDON, ON) Automatic Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) system assists officer in stopping and charging a driver from London in a stolen vehicle.
On May 8, 2024, at 2:36 a.m., a Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) member, while on general patrol on Wellington Road in the City of London, was alerted by the Automatic Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) system, of a vehicle travelling with unattached licence plates.
A traffic stop was initiated.
It was determined the vehicle had previously been reported as stolen from the City of Windsor.
Three occupants were placed under arrest without incident.
As a result, David UFIMZEFF, a 21-year-old of Windsor, has been charged under Criminal Code and Highway Traffic Act with:
Possession Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 (two counts)
Passenger fail to properly wear seat belt
The accused has been released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice on July 18, 2024, to speak to the charges.
Two 17-year-olds, both of London, have been charged under the Criminal Code with:
Possession Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 (two counts)
The 17-year-old driver has been charged additionally under the Highway Traffic Act with Class G1 licence holder unaccompanied by qualified driver.
The youth have been released from police custody and are scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice at a future date to speak to the charges.
The youths identities are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA).
The In Car Camera and ALPR have been operating in Middlesex County OPP vehicles since March 13, 2023. Middlesex OPP officers continue to see drivers operating vehicles that do not have valid, registered licence plates, are currently driving unlicenced, while under suspension or prohibited.
