(SIOUX LOOKOUT, ON) Officers with the Sioux Lookout Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested and charged one individual found to be breaching a Prohibition Order Regarding Children.
Around 6:00 p.m. on Friday, August 2, 2024, Sioux Lookout OPP officers were dispatched to the Town Beach following reports of multiple intoxicated persons. When police attended, one individual fled the area and attempted to evade officers. Investigation revealed the individual to be bound by an order of prohibition against them attending any public park or public swimming area where youth under 16 years of age were reasonably expected to be.
As a result of the investigation, Matthew OGEMAWENENE, 21-years old, of North Caribou Lake First Nation, was arrested and charged under the Criminal Code with Failure to Comply with a Prohibition Order Regarding Children. The accused was remanded into custody and will next appear in front of the Ontario Court of Justice Kenora Bail Court on August 7, 2024.
A Prohibition Order Regarding Children is a court-imposed mandate intended to protect children from sexual violence. It restricts the activities of an individual convicted of specific offences involving persons under 16 years of age. Individuals found to be breaching Prohibition Order conditions can face serious consequences, including time in prison and/or fines. These orders are in place to ensure public safety, providing officers and the courts a means through which convicted offenders can be held accountable for engaging in activities that are likely to result in harm to themselves or others.
