(LEEDS and the THOUSAND ISLAND TWP., ON) The Leeds County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating a fatal water craft collision on the St. Lawrence River.
OPP officers and Leeds and Grenville Paramedics responded to the report of a crash involving a personal watercraft on Sunday, October 6, 2024, just before 6:00 a.m. It happened among a group of small islands, just west of the Thousand Islands Bridge, between the mainland and Hill Island.
Its believed the single PWC, with two people onboard, had collided with an obstacle some time overnight. The passenger was able to swim to shore to get help.
A group in a boat searched the area and located the male driver in the water with no vital signs.
The 21-year-old male was pronounced deceased after being brought to shore. The deceased individuals name will not be released.
The investigation is in its early stages, with assistance from the OPP Forensic Identification Services Unit, and in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner.
