(GERALDTON, ON) An Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) device alerted officers of an expired licence plate and lead to police seizing thirteen cases of chewing tobacco.
On January 14th, 2025, at approximately 2:00 p.m., members of the Greenstone Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) initiated a traffic stop after an ALPR hit along Highway 11 in Geraldton.
Through investigation, the officer observed several cases of tobacco products. It was determined that the driver of the motor vehicle was over the legal limit and had no permit for the tobacco. Officers seized thirteen cases of chewing tobacco.
As a result, Robert STARR, a 46-year-old from Thunder Bay, has been charged under the Tobacco Tax Act and the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act with:
· Possession of Untaxed Cigars and Other Tobacco
· Operate a Motor Vehicle Without Insurance
